§         The History of Neuro Linguistic Programming.

§         The Three Legs of NLP:

·        Know your outcome.

·        Have the sensory skills to know when you are achieving it.

·        Have the flexibility to change your behaviour until you get it.

§         Rapport; how to build and improve relationship skills (useful in all communication, particularly within palliative care context when speedy rapport is required).

§         Sensory Acuity;(supports rapport building) fine-tuning your senses to better understand the reactions of patients/families (and yourself).

§         Filters; how we process information to create meaning (supports the presentation of information, influencing, motivating, giving feedback). Adds to quality of life.

§         The Presuppositions of NLP; the code to model to achieve personal excellence.

§         How to develop Well-formed Outcomes (for goal setting – self and others) this is helpful in preparing patients for discharge, plans and prioritising hopes and plans for the future.

§         How to give and receive feedback positively.

§         Language; the power of positive language for yourself and others (influencing – verbal or written). Using soft language patterns to help free patients and carers into a resourceful state.

§         Anchoring; how to “store” and “access” positive personal resources (e.g. confidence, calm, focussed) on demand. Learn how to help patients/carers access these resources.

§         An introduction to Sub-modalities; how to construct new meaning by re-constructing out of date perceptions (supports outcome setting). Help loosen limited beliefs to improve quality of life.

§         An introduction to Timelines; how to personally structure time (time management, personal effectiveness, planning, goal setting). A Timeline can be used therapeutically with patients/families/carers.
